Ysgol Llanhari provides a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum.

Ysgol Llanhari provides a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum across the Progression Steps. We want all individuals to have access to the experiences, knowledge and skills they need in order to be responsible, active citizens who are ready to thrive in the twenty-first century.

As a 3-19 school we aim to build on the skills and knowledge of our pupils from Nursery to the end of Year 13. We take advantage of every opportunity to transition between the learning periods in Llanhari, sharing staff expertise across the primary and secondary sectors. We work together to create a learning continuum that ensures progression and continuity and promotes higher attainment.

The Four Purposes are at the heart of our curriculum. Our aspiration for all children is that they develop to be:

  • ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives
  • enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work
  • ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world
  • healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society

Llanhari Cluster Curriculum Summary

Blended Learning

Our curriculum up to year 9 includes learning opportunities within and across each of the Six Areas of Learning and Experience, namely:

  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Mathematics and Numeracy
  • Languages, Literacy and Communication
  • Science and Technology
  • Humanities
  • Expressive Arts.

In realising the curriculum, we foster our learners’ understanding of careers education and experiences linked to the world of work together with human rights and diversity. We also give full consideration to the mandatory elements of the Curriculum, namely Religion, Values and Ethics (RVE), Relationship and Sexuality Education (RSE), Welsh and English.

The cross-curricular skills of literacy, numeracy and digital competence are embedded throughout the curriculum and we ensure that there are plenty of opportunities for pupils to develop, refine and apply these skills across the learning and experience areas.

Year 10 and 11 (age 14 – 16 , KS4 )

The core subjects of Welsh, English, Mathematics and Science are taught along with Physical Education, Religious Education, Personal and Social Education (PSE) which includes Sex and Relationships Education and Work Related Education and the Welsh Baccalaureate to every pupil. In addition, we offer an Agored Cymru PSE course at level 2 to some pupils. All pupils will be able to choose from a range of Level 2 option subjects (GCSE/BTEC).  Specific information is provided to pupils and parents annually regarding the option choices.

Years 12 and 13 (age 16 – 18, KS5)

Pupils will be able to choose from a range of subjects to study to Level 3 (As/ A Level and BTEC).  Personal and Social Education which includes Religious Education, Sex Education and Work Related Education is also taught.  We strongly recommend that the pupils choose to study the Welsh Baccalaureate in the sixth form. Ysgol Llanhari works collaboratively with local Welsh medium secondary schools (RCT and Bridgend LEA) in a consortium in order to provide some courses.  This ensures progression within the school for pupils whilst ensuring a broad range of subjects.  This partnership provides pupils with an extra opportunity to develop their social skills and confidence in preparation for the world of work or university within the security of remaining within Ysgol Llanhari as their base school.
